ET: Akinleye v Basingstoke

On 4th November 2024 the Employment Tribunal handed down its decision in the case of Akinleye & Olumade v Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council & Others (1402852) (Amended Judgement).

It had been tasked with hearing a claim, brought by two taxi drivers, alleging discrimination, under the Equality Act 2010, against Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council.  The Tribunal, as outlined in the judgement (at para. 1357), found:

…both claimants were subjected to unwanted treatment which was related to race and that the behaviour of the authority officers created on occasions, a hostile and intimidating working environment for them.

The impact, and ultimate effect, of such Employment Tribunal decisions on licensing matters remains to be seen.  Keeping an eye on developments, for both licensing authorities and licence holders alike, would be prudent for the future.
